-
Idle speed
screw sets normal idle speed
-
High speed
idle setting for idle speed on a cold engine
-
Air Fuel
Mixture screws controls air/fuel mixture at idle only
-
Center port
– manifold vacuum signal for PCV valve
-
Manifold
valve on back is for brakes or other systems. Plug if not in
use
-
There are
two vacuum ports on the front of the carburetor, the higher
and left one is for the distributor. It is the partial or
times vacuum port
-
The port in
front and on the right and slightly lower is to connect to the
automatic transmission. Cap if not using
-
Check to see
if the distributor uses ported or manifold vacuum. The
manifold vacuum will feel strong if finger is placed over
port. The ported vacuum will have a gentle vacuum.
-
Adjust
air/fuel mixture screws
-
Effect
the idle only
-
When
engine is running, turn screw in (cw) until you hear the
idle drop. Then, back out one quarter to one half turn out
(ccw). This is the more economical setting.
-
Following
the preceding directions for the other air/fuel mixture
screw.
-
If you
want a richer mixture, screw the sir/fuel mixture screws
out (ccw) until the idle start to get rough. Then turn the
screw in (cw) one quarter to one half a turn.
-
Following
the preceding directions for the other air/fuel mixture
screw.
-
After
adjusting air/fuel mixture screws, adjust regular idle
screw.
-
For more
adjustment, loosen the screw over the small plate that holds
the metering jets. There are two of them.
-
To take the
top off remove the two clips on the side
-
Use a T25
torx bit and remove the screws on top\
-
Adjust float
level to 7/16 at the center using a drill bit
-
Use the
manual to switch the jets as directed.
-
Adjust the
electric choke
-
Loosen
the three screws on the choke housing
-
Turn the
choke cap ccw to make it leaner, the butterfly valve
should be shut and just closed with a little movement
-
Next,
adjust the fast idle screw found under the main idle
screw. Adjust idle speed when choke is on.
-
More
idle turn cw, less idle turn ccw

-
If adjusting
the idle screws have not noticeable effects, try cleaning the
idle screws with a blast from an air gun
-
If you can’t
set the idle low enough, try the idle screw then the high idle
screw.
-
If you have
erratic idle, check for a vacuum leak. Spray carburetor
cleaner around the carburetor checking to see if it gets
sucked into the base of the carburetor and the idle jumps.
-
If you are
getting sputters under load, lean under load, it may be a
punched fuel line, dirt in the line, or fuel pressure is to
low.
-
If you are
smelling fuel (fuel leak) it could be fuel coming out of the
vent at the top of the carburetor. Maybe the fuel pressure is
too high. It should be about 6 lbs. but not over 7 lbs.
-
If you have
an erratic idle and/or high idle – check to see if the vacuum
advanced hose is on the wrong port. The low port on the front
of the carburetor is for the manifold vacuum and it will have
a strong pull when a finger is placed over the port. The
higher port on the front of the carburetor is for the timed
vacuum and it will have a weak pull when a finger is placed
over the port.
-
Engine idles
high. Check rear port, it should be plugged or used.
-
When petal
is pushed, the engine hesitates. Adjust the pump connected to
the linkage. It has three holes on the linkage and is the
accelerator pump.
-
Off idle
surge. If the engine wants to surge when coming off idle,
adjust the idle mixture screws.
